    intake grate install question

when installing a new grate, should I use loctite on the bolts? Do I have to caulk anything?

    thanks.

    well>>>
it is a good idea to thoroughly clean the OEM hardware when re-using, and it`s doesn`t hurt to use some type of thread sealant to protect the bolts from corrosion and so they can be easily removed.
Do not overtighten, and torque to spec...
This is what I have used:

some new grates come with new hardware and some do not...

thread sealant wont hurt anything....just makes good seal...

no locktight, could rip apart threads when taking off the next time

I use marine grade grease! Works great no problems in years. You use thread lock on motor parts!

others have used anti-seize, water poof grease on the bolt threads...
it`s to easy to fubar one of those plate inserts...
like I said, I`ve had good luck with the thread sealant, this particular stuff has a bit of locking compound in it, just enough to prevent bolts from backing out due to vibration or whatever...

I`m pretty sure the factory used something like 542 which is similar...

Thanks guys... Could have sworn the other night I read where someone was talking about using the blue lock-tite instead of the red on the rideplate bolts --which is why I was asking. Same post was saying the factory used the red (very hard to remove).
I'll just go w/ the thread sealant Besides, it shouldn't vibrate much so not sure why someone would use lock-tite anyways---that stuff is just that--LOCK TIGHT!!!

well at least the ride plate bolts are in an area where you can apply heat to soften any loctite...
so far any OEM bolts I have replaced came with orange thread compound already on the bolt, I believe this is done by the vendor/manufacturer...

how are you guys figuring out when to stop heating the bolt? Do you heat them for a few seconds or more like a minute? when the house burns down?
