    Tragedy on the Ohio

    http://www.courierpress.com/news/201...r-craft-rider/

    Evansville, IN / Henderson, KY

I was just a few miles down river from where this happened and helped a bit for the search before i almost ran out of fuel and had to get out of the water. My prayers to her friends and family.

How sad. It's why I'm staying off the water this weekend - too many crazy people. I hope this isn't another hit and run type accident.

We had a 12 yo girl get killed last weekend when she fell off a tube. About 150 yards from a busy boat launch. I don't know what people think when they take their small kids tubbing on a holiday weekend on the busiest river for 100 miles.I'm sure the boat that hit her probably didn't even see her in the water. Water safety is everyone's respondsablity, but common sense goes along ways.

We have a long speed limited channel that runs right past our cottage.

It is narrow along one section, and shallow outside the channel, so boats pass each other fairly close and there is not much room to maneuver.

Every so often I see a family towing a tube with kids down the channel. When I tell them to put the kids in the boat, I get told that they are just fine on the tube.

Of course, if someone falls off, the tow boat can't just turn right around and go back, since the channel is narrow and busy. So the ejected kid(s) would be floating in the channel while other boats are coming through.

Someday someone young is going to get run over...

    Tragedy in SoLA, too...

Weekend before last: 5 kids in a bateau w/outboard. They decided to stop & take a dip in the river after crossing the lake, but they left the motor running in neutral. The theory is that the last kid to jump in the river accidentally kicked the shift/throttle lever (or his lifejacket or shirt grabbed it). The boat jumped into forward and hit 4 out of the 5. When it was over, one young man had to have surgery on his arm where the prop got him, one girl was fine, but the other 3 were killed. The youngest was 14 and the oldest was 24. Tragic...

Have a great summer, but please be careful guys...
