    SL650 problems

    Hey all,

I have a 94 sl650, Ive had problems with it since the day bought it used about 2 years ago. It will not rev up on the water, on about two occassion I have actually been able to get it to go, then as long as I keep it reved up it will be fine, but as soon as I would let it rev back down it started to do the same thing again ( makes like a bogging sound and it doesnt go anywhere). I have replaced all the heads, head gaskets, inspected the jugs, replaced the jug gaskets, rebuilt the carbs, replaced exhaust manifold gaskets, new plugs, triple outlet pump, new fuel lines. It seems to be getting water into the engine from somewhere, if I run it on land ( short periods of time only) it seems to run great, as soon as it gets in water that is when the problems start. We just recently pulled the reeds out and noticed two of them are bad, would this be causing my problems? any help would be great, thanks!

Interesting, mine does the same thing to me. For example, could be going along, then heading into shore and get to the no wake zone. Idles fine, but if I try to get on the throttle out of the no wake zone then it just boggs down. give it short bursts for a bit and it will eventually clear itself and go full throttle.

It's like it is getting flooded when coming to a stop and getting itself back into the water.

why do you think you are getting water in your motor?

When I pull the plugs out steam comes out and the plugs are washed ( dont smell like gas though). Could the reeds being bad cause a small amount of water to get sucked back in from the exhaust?

    No.

Head gasket, exh gasket, or cracked block are the usual suspects.

I'd be removing your heads for an inspection.

And quickly before internals turn into rusted up boat anchors.

but ive replaced all the heads, and heads gaskets (gaskets ive replaced twice). Where on the block would it be cracked? Ive pulled all the jugs and inspected them. The only things I havent looked at are the block itself and the exhaust man.
