    787 rebuild opinions

Got a super clean 98 SPX. Motor was locked when I got it. Got it for $450 w/trailer.

Looking for opinions on rebuild options. Crank is rusted. Cases are good. Pistons and sleeves are scored. CB shaft is a bit rusty on the gear. Everything in the mag housing was rusty. I think it will all clean up except for the starter.

Considered SBT but just not sure I want to give up my mostly clean freshwater block for some over bored saltwater piece of crap with an over-milled low compression head.

Planning on keeping this thing around for a while so I want to maintain as much reliability with the lowest cost possible.

Thinking SBT crank and CB shaft, and Wiseco, OEM, or SBT pistons. The pistons are all similar in cost.

Here's some pics of the tear down. http://picasaweb.google.com/11465490...eat=directlink

    Fire away with the opinions.

You should check with a dealer to see if a Rotax Reman engine is still available. Everything is OEM brand new, including sleeves and stock bore pistons. If not available, get OEM once-overs on pistons. If you still have stock bore there will be 81.89 stamped on top of your existing pistons. SBT's cranks and c/b shafts are fine, I run them myself.

Opinions are like a$$holes, everybody's got one. I really expected more. I don't want to just buy a used motor and end up with a pos.

I would find Reputable used parts guys and take it from there. Also search CL in your area. I found an AWESOME crank guy locally thru CL.

That was a steal man...I would have drove from MN to pick that up. The 98 SPX is my unicorn!! LOL
