    96 SLT700 ignition issues

This ski is new to me this year so I did some research, went through everything recommended and she runs great. The problem is last night the ignition started just shutting off, only at idle and then won't restart for a few minutes. Now before putting it in the water I switched the CDI power wire to the orange terminal as described here but it still wouldn't restart for a few minutes after stopping. Last night was the third time out so far but the first time for the stopping on it's own. Any ideas?

Is this the original ignition, or is the Updated Ignition Kit installed?

To be thorough, remove and clean both ends of the battery negative cable, especially at the engine end. Also check all the grounds inside the eletrical box.

In fact, check all connections inside the electrical box. Look for loose connectors, wires that are damaged, corrosion, etc.

I believe it's the original, I'll recheck all connections. What baffled me is that the fix for the restart didn't work. Are any of the parts from a 96 780 interchangeable?

Battery is good, I rode it today and it seems to have a bog off idle if you hammer the throttle. Seems like it wants to stall, could the oil the previous owner had in it maybe be loading it up?

Still not sure why moving the CDI wire didn't fix the restarting problem, runs perfect otherwise.

The warm re-start fix is just to fix a problem with the engine not starting again right after YOU shut if off.

That fix does not have anything to do with a sudden and unexpected engine shut down without you wanting it shut down.

Something is killing the ignition while the engine is running.

If it is the original ignition system in there, that may be all it is - just another failure mode of the original ignition. In which case all you need to do is install the Ignition System Update Kit.

Just to cover the bases, do check over the Black/Yellow wiring from the lanyard kill switch. Make sure it ohms out properly. Zero ohms when the lanyard is out, and infinite or near infinite ohms when the lanyard is in.

Also make sure the wires are not shorted to or rubbing against the engine anywhere.

Also rec-check ALL of the Black wires to engine ground. A loose or poor ground connection anywhere in the system can create all sorts of weird symptoms.

could be running rich.. you chance the fuel lines correct? im pretty sure you said you did last time i talked to you.

the cdi wire not fixing it could be the fact that thats not the issue.. and the issue is that your cdi/ stator is going..

Have you verified it's a spark issue?
It may be you're running too rich or lean or have a fuel delivery problem at idle.
I'd first check to see if you lost spark during the time it will not re-start.

The reason for switching the wire to orange is so that the CDI actually gets turned off and then restarted when the power is applied.
Some of the CDI circuits would go bad and the crazy things would think the engine was still running and of course not allow for re-start.

After riding it today I've determined that its shutting down because its not idling right. It may be a rich condition I'm not sure yet but it seems like it's loading up when you idle for any length of time. It definitely doesn't seem like the spark is being interrupted.

As far as the restarting problem, I did the repair as instructed but it still wont start for 5 mins or so after I shut it down.

Is that after you choose to shut it down while it is running properly, or after it dies or is already having trouble idling and you turn it off?
