    Need some help with porpoising

Most of the time I ride my ski on the delaware river by my house. It's like glass and I've never had a problem. well today I took it down river to a much bigger riding area. I could not say hooked up in the chop at all. I'm gonna order a worx grate and thinking about a ride plate extension. how much will this slow my ski down?? I'm not tryin to lose to much top end, but I'm gonna start riding in the bay down the shore soon and I don't want this problem.

A Worx grate will often chop an MPH. I am not sure about a plate extension though.

On my old X-4 I shimmed the stock tabs and it helped a lot with the bouncy in the chop (with a boat that small it is almost unavoidable). That scrubbed another MPH or so.

Keep in mind, the speed loss was on smooth water. In the chop it was faster with the grate and the shimmed tabs.

get some trim tabs before the hull extender

if you need more after just the tabs, then get the extender

I used stainless washers cut in half. Put them behind the screws with blob of RTV on the screws themselves. They were standard washers as far as thickness but I can not remember what the actual deflection was. It was a few years ago, you see.

It cost a lot less than extended tabs, that is for sure.

In the end, if the water is rough enough, you are going to bounce an X-4 no matter what you do to it. You will never get it to handle rougher water like an XPL or RX (which are nowhere near as good in heavy chop as a GTXL or 4-tec). In what I call big water, where you get either a lot of boat traffic and/or wind, the only solution is to slow down and ride it out, or have a bigger boat.

yeah, they have both high wind and a lot of boat traffic down there. I felt like I was racing motocross again lol. I'm gonna pick up some hydro turf too. I slipped and fell on my ass a few times lol.

I like the Gator Grips a lot better than HT, but it is kind of a personal thing. I have never slipped with the GGs (this is with some waters shoes from OP that are awsome).

I had HT on a GS we used to have and did not like them at all.

The price is pretty much the same.

I went a different route than Krunch to eliminate the porpoising. If you shim the rear of the stock tabs with 1/2"x 5" strips of 26 GA sheetmetal, until it no longer porpoises trimmed all the way up, then you are good. Normally only two pieces are needed.

Also on X-4's you lose absolutely no top end with a Worx grate. At least up to 63 mph.

And I would not do trim tabs. Why get something to shove the nose down? Guess what happens when you trim up? The two fight eachother, and the tabs significantly load the engine.

But if you gotta have a set I'll sell you my R&D 0 degree tabs.

Now if you are getting up on plane and she's smooth as silk, then all of a sudden it snatches down on one side, the leading edge of the tab on that side of the hull has come loose, and needs to be re-siliconed.
