    Yamaha Cylinders Nikasil or Not

Can anyone confirm which (if any) of the yamaha 4 stroke engines have nikasil plating. I would have expected them to be steel inserts.
Yamaha lists oversized pistons for the FX-140 (4 sizes), but only standard size for the FXHO. I need confirmation as I am currently in the process of FXHO rebuild.

    not!

I could be wrong so stick a super magnet on the side of the cylinder and see how hard it is to get off.
    If hard, it's all steel!
If easy, nicky has been there!
Compare this to a cylinder wall on a 2 stroker motor.
It only looks like there's no steel sleeve as the block is cast around the in place sleeves and the alloy fills over the top of the sleeves. This is the way all good quality Jap motors are made, including Honda race motors.
When their machined all is revealed it the first couple of cuts.

    Hope this helps?!

I would have suspected steel aswell for a 4 stroke but a mate reckoned he read somewhere they were nikasil. Thank for the reply

There seems to be alot of confusion over this......even SBT have said they are nikasil!
They are steel bore, & 1 oversize piston set is offered by yamaha.

Strange thing is Yamaha do not offer any oversize pistons for the FXHO, wonder why that is.

Because then you have to buy another nice new ski instead of fixing your old one.

    Way of the world.

Try finding oversized pistons for a SHO?
