    1999 XL1200 Limited HELP!!!!

I have a 1999 xl1200 limited. today when i went to get it ready for the lake tomorrow, i installed a new battery hit the start switch and the ski started on the second try. the problem is it went to 6000 rpms and would not cut off. i pulled the plug wires the kill switch it was still running wide open. luck i had the water hooked up. i finally hit the throttle and it shut down. now i am scared to start it again. what would cause this. thanks.

Lean condition will cause that and the best thing to do is do what you did...add as much fuel as possilbe..and quickly. You have very little time before serious damage is done.
You have an air leak, lean mixture on your screws or carb issues.
