1996 kawasaki 900 zxi
Can someone please help me out here. I'm fixing a 96 kawasaki 900 zxi, the starter spins but won't engage. Where do I start? Any info on this is much appreciated!

The starter connects to this gear inside the stator housing. When the starter engages it and pushes the gear outward to the flywheel to turn the motor over. The bearings in that gear sometimes get dirty and then shot. You can sometimes clean these and get them working again. For the hassle it takes to get to it I would just replace it.
You will have to take the motor out to get to this gear because the flywheel has to come off. Unless you like or can work in a very tight spot you could probably do it with the motor in but it would be a pain and a very tight job in the long run.
