Engine failure 8 miles from shore at full throttle... where do i start?

    04 RXP
50 hours on SBT motor installed 2 years ago, 103 hours total on machine
    Riva intake and intake grate
Rebuilt supercharger with new clutch (through Jerry) 30 hours ago
Amsoil marine syn oil replaced 2 months ago / 6 hours ago

    What bad luck...

Took off on a fast run for about 16 miles over light chop. Stopped for a half hour swam for a bit and headed back. Within 3 minutes the engine quit at full throttle going over very light chop. Starter good, battery good. Tried to start it and it sounded like it was out of time. Tapped the start button again and it sounded like the engine was totally locked up now. Just yesterday I had put about 3 gallons of 87 grade gas in that may have been old. Not sure.

So we towed it back (thankfully my friend who was with me has a 250hp kawasaki). So to make things worse the metal hook shears off, from the end of the two rope and slingshots back at us and goes right into the back of my leg (see picture below). Never had more excurciating pain aside from when this crazy girl kicked me in the balls back in 6th grade with her cowboy boots... Anyway I had to get 8 stitches and a tetanus shot yesterday night...

So where do I start? Take the valve cover off? Pull the plugs and look down? Take the nozzle cap off the back of the impellor and try to spin the engine over manually? Pull supercharger and inspect the bearings?

Anyone in the area Milwaukee / Illinois want some side work?

    Sorry to hear dude.

I would probably put it down to a dropped valve.

I bet SBT would be buying the cheapest valves from china and wouldnt be surprised if it is this.

It could have dropped a valve, they are known for doing this,
and I believe you're supposed to use no lower than 91 octane

Ouch man sorry to hear, definitely think it's a dropped valve.

Does SBT warranty their engines? Seems like they are known to give problems.

where or who told you to run 87 octane? did you know this could also have affected something??????
detonation is cause by insufficient octane, on any engine that is recommended to run 91 or higher.

Dont tell SBT you put 87 octane, tell them you fill that bitch up with premium and then it blew up.

I failed to mention that we were almost totally out of gas the day before the motor quit... Had to put in like a few gallons of older 87 gas.... Not sure that it had any effect on it.

Pulled the valve cover off and the spark plugs

The valves look ok from the top, no play in any of the rockers and I can see the tops of the valves. When I pulled the spark plugs the plug closest to the timing chain was all mashed up... something was in the piston and I certainly hope it wasn't a valve that broke off... wtf... any ideas?
