I just purchased an SLX-780. Time to work AGAIN!

So I posted that I was looking at an SLT750 yesterday, but I was driving along the road to day and found this sweet little SLX tucked away on a boat lot. I was really looking for a 750, but o well. The guy was asking 900.00 for it, but after two hours of haggling, I got it for $550.00. This will be a nice addition to my SL750 that we have.

    The good

Has 150 PSI across all cylinders
Runs Perfect when Premix is added to the carbs
Pump is perfect with not a chip.
    MFD works great
MFD Shows 22 hours on the (not sure if this can be reset)
All fuel lines look to be black, not grey

    The Bad (or unknown)
The fuel sending unit is gone. I just priced one on Ebay for $95
    Sun faded
    Trailer needs to be rewired
Has stock fuel pump (although it looks to have a triple output)

    So here are my questions.

Do the 780s suffer from the same issues as the 750?
Should I convert it to premix?
The carbs look like they are flipped the opposite way than my 750. The fuel lines are to the outside of the boat. Why is that?
    Anything else that I missed?

I am well versed on these skis, and I wonder if i stumbled onto a real gem here.

Not bad, that works out to $3675.00 per hour.

I think you found a gem indeed.
No, the 780's aren't prone to the same fuel related issues that plagued the 750's. That is indeed an OEM pentagonal 3-outlet fuel pump, so you're good there.

If it were me, I'd leave the oil pump on, but replace all the lines.

Yes the 780's had the carb diaphragms next to the cylinders and the fuel side facing out. I'm not sure why the difference, but I don't think it matters a lot. The nice thing is the carb rack on the 780 has the restrictor built into the MAG carb, so there's no little brass piece to misplace.

150PSI across all 3 cylinders is fantastic!

Because of the unknown fuel condition, I would remove the carbs to clean them and install rebuild kits. I would also install new needles and seats to be on the safe side (2.0). Pop-off pressure should be 20-24PSI. You can also get rebuild kits for the fuel pump. That's probably not a bad thing just to make sure everything is in top shape.

    Nice find!

I'm sure John Z has a fuel sender, much cheaper then $95 too.

Sometimes the hour meter on the MFD does reset itself. Not supposed to, but it happens, usually when the battery is being messed with.

    Looks like an excellent find

So should I worry about replacing the fuel pump? How can I get in touch with John?

780 engines already have the triple outlet fuel pump. If you want to be sure it is 100%, you can rebuild it.
