Is this my wear ring? What should it look like?

I pulled a big chunk of black plastic (pictured) out of my jet pump of my 1996 xp. Is it the wear ring, or is the white plastic part around the impeller the wear ring? Is the drive shaft suppose to be welded to the impeller as mine is?

WOW! Just when you thought you've seen it all. Maybe they thought if they eliminated the backlash in the splines they could get a little more hp out the rear.

+1. It's amazing what ppl will do to cut corners. That set up is definitely as a result of damaged splines on the drive shaft and or the impeller. Definitely need a new drive shaft, wear ring and impellor. Might be able to pick one up as a set from one of these fine members on the forum.

Now my problem is, how do I get the impeller off? I have everything off, including the cone, but I have no idea how to twist the drive shaft? SHould i apply heat to the shaft at the base where it is welded?

put the other end of the shaft, the flat side,in a vice and turn the drive shaft with a pipe wrench.
