    98xl1200 running on two cylinders?

Here we are at the lake for the week and the 98xl1200 I sold to my sis-in-law acts like it's
Running on two cylinders. Checked the plugs on the 170 ski. Front plug black and dry, middle
Plug black an wet with gas, back plug perfect, bronzed and dry. Thought may just need new
Plugs. Swapped out all three, no luck. Ski runs like an old Chevette...uphill, won't go over
40 mph and takes forever to get there. Going to check for spark next. Maybe plug wires?
After that, I'm lost. Any help would greatly improve relations. Thanks.

Sis-in-law took it in to shop on the lake. Carbs cleaned next day (to the tune of $360!) and it runs like a champ.
Ski has 144 hours on it.
