Can anybody run a serial number from an engine for me?

I'm trying to determine if my engine is a '97 or '96

    Hull is a Polaris '97 SLT780 engine is a Blue Fuji serial # 9703549 Product #EC780PWE0313543

I've already called 4 Polaris dealers and they didn't help at all.

Is that engine number actually EC78PWE0313543

    Per the service manual;
EC78PWE03 was used for all of 1997 and some of 1996

EC78PWE02 was used for some 1996 production (different CDI ignition timing, different carb jetting)

    What you posted was EC780PWE03...

The EC78PWE03 code was used for both 1997 and some of 1996 production.

does this mean the 97 & 96 used the same engine (EC78PWEO3) but may have been timed and jetted differently for the ones used in the '96?

Mine reads EC78PWE03. I own a 1996 SLT 780. The EC78PWE02 has the different settings.

Does this means mine is a '96 with '96 settings?

So what are your settings-jets and adjusters? and popoff?

My understanding, which may be incorrect, is that the 1996 and 1997 engines are mechanically the same. You can verify this by comparing the part numbers for the cylinders, heads and exhaust manifolds between the two years. These are the pieces that would most affect tuning, other than the carburetors themselves.

If the 780 engines ARE the same between the two years, then EITHER set of carburetor jets and screws adjustments should work, IF the carburetors for both years are the same exact model and bore size (38mm?).

I seem to recall reading somewhere that there are different versions of the Mikuni carb. As I recall the story, one carb version has two low speed holes in the venturi plenum, and the other carb version has three tiny holes. One carb has a single hole below the closed throttle plate, and the other does does not. I don't recall exactly where I read all that

While the general specification for the 780 says 95HP for 1997, and only 90HP for 1996, often these spec listings are not 100% accurate.

In a production environment, there may have been running changes to the carb+engine packages that Polaris was receiving from Fuji Japan. Fuji may have made a change during the Polaris 1996 production run, and Polaris just rolled the changed/updated engines into the hulls as they came down the line. This may have happened mid-1996, which is why there are two versions of the engine listed for 1996 production.

In 1995, the Fuji 780 engine was only sold in one model, the SLX780. The next year, it was the ONLY Fuji engine used.

1996 was a busy year for Polaris, as it was the first year they had both Fuji and 'domestic' engines coming into the factory. In addition to the 780 Fuji engine (used in only three 1996 models, SL780, SLT780, SLX780), there was the domestic 700, 900, 1050 engines (used in the same SL and SLT hulls, and the Hurricane).

In 1997, the 780 was only sold in SL780 and SLT780 models. Other than the Pro 785, everything else was domestic engines. After 1997, the only Fuji engine was the Pro 785.

Yes K447. I just sent him a PM on that. It is in the Clymer Manual. Page 82, Table 6. Some 96 models have the first transition hole below throttle plate at idle. Those settings are different. Low: 5/8 High: MAG, 3/4 Center, 3/4 PTO, 1. Mine and I think his have the hole above and should be: Low: 1 3/8 High: MAG, 1 1/8 Center, 7/8 PTO, 1 1/4. (My brother set mine at these settings when my carbs were rebuilt.)

I think that is his problem because the settings on the 97 are Low: 1 1/4 and High: 1/8 according to the manual.

It seems he may have a 96 motor in a 97 hull.

I have a headache from this stuff. I don't know how you guys do it.

Here's the sticker which is a little fuzzy but you can see that the number is EC780PWE03

and thanks for the rundown on the model history, not sure what to do with it, but I have the new jets ordered so I can set it all up as a '96.

    here's the ski
