    800 Grate Worth the Effort?

I have always thought about using an 800 grate, but wanted everyone's opinon. Is the grate really gain 1 mph? What am I losing by changing grates? Does anyone just use the 800 grate all of the time? Boy, do I have a lot of questions. Where would I buy one - R&D or Riva? I've read where some are working on the grate to make it more efficient.

    Thanks in advance.

I run the 800 grate all the time. You will cavitate on the holeshot but if you learn to feather the throttle out of the hole you can live with it.

Yes you will gain mph: My test results on 2005 GPR.
    1200 Grate:
    67.4mph
    67.8mph
    67.2mph

    800 Grate:
    68.6mph
    68.4mph
    68.2mph

    Hope that helps

I run the 800 also. Holeshot suffers, but yes you can learn to feather the throttle. Also it doesnt grab as well in long sweeping turns, but its not dangerous.

R&D 800 grate, but they have been out of stock here lately. There are some modified grates out there, but be careful removing material.

Modify grate & grate comes apart = you get hurt.

R&D 800 grate. I got mine from Carl at Island Racing.

I think R&D is the only company that makes a 800 grate.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'll see if Carl or R&D have one for sale. Sounds as though the grate should remain stock.

It all depend how you ride your ski. If you ride miles and miles of flat water, and that last tenth of mph is important to you the grate is for you. but if you ride rough water, holeshot, tight turn and go, thats not for you. I sacrifice 1 mph or even 2 mph for a better bottom end and better hook up.

I ordered one from Carl. I'll have to see what the differrences are and make a decision. But, I do appreicate comments from those that have already been there.

i used to leave mine in all the time to on the single piper (unless drag racing or something crazy like that). It is for sure a 1mph (on avg) gain. Somtimes a hair more depending on the ski and the set-up.

Easy 1 MPH! But real world drag racing you run up on an stage 1 or 2 RXP you will get spanked, blistered, and whipped up on that race will be over before you get rollin unless your racing for a country mile. My suggestion get both always have them with you in the truck only takes a minute to change one for speed runs one for racing. I found the 800 to work pretty good in medium chop on the Detroit river from a roll. Good Luck.
