    Steady RPM's on 2003 1300R

We just bought a used 2003 Yamaha 1300R. The ski is great but it wont hold steady RPM's between 5000 and 6000. If you try to hold a steady 5000 RPM's, the ski "surges" up to approx. 5600 RPM's then back down...then back up...etc. Anything above 6000 and below 5000 is good. Any ideas?

I think the power valves open in that rpm range causing it to surge....plus the fact that its a 2 stroke.

its quite normal, my novi powered ported 1300 turns into a monster at that rpm range, it hits 5000 rpm and its like pow!

    Thanks to you all...

Is there anything I can do about it? In order to keep from surging I have to run either 0 to 35mph or 55 to 70....nothing in between:/ When I'm just kinda cruising I'd like to be able to stay at around 45.

YES!!!! It is truly like an on/off switch. Do you know of anything that can prevent this?

Check the operation of your power valves, they might be hung in the open position, also check the linkage between the cylinders for ware. I had a similar problem and found that the power valves were sticking at times from being gummed up and that caused the linkage to get out of sink between each cyl. Also power valve servo motor might be bad also. Tommy Jordan

i run gas valves so my jump is not due to pv's getting stuck....its just how a ported boat runs when i transition from low speed to high speed circut , i could maybe tune it more to make the transition smoother but i kinda like it

do what tommy (2fsat4u) says, he knows the ol gpr's better than 99.85% of the people on here as it may be your issue.
