Impros double bearing mod - Xtreme Jetsports SS wear ring

I'll be testing an Impros modded double bearing pump this weekend.
Thanks to our forum member Rocketman for sending this to me.
This pump mod uses sealed bearings so their is no need for grease, or oil.

I installed a brand new stainless steel wear ring that i just bought from Bruce Taylor of Xtreme Jetsports. This thing is a work of art. The tolerance between the impeller and wear ring is TIGHT!!!

I'll follow up after the weekend and let you guys know how this pump did.

I wouldn't put too much faith in sealed pump bearings. Kawi uses them and failed bearings was the number one problem with Ultras for years. You never had a bearing problem with the oil (now grease) filled bearings on a SD unless you got water in them. The sealed bearings are non servicable throw aways.

It seems to me - that if you remove the inner seals of the sealed bearings and pump or fill the inside with a low melt point grease - it wouls be the best of both worlds - I would still put oil in the rear cone as a safety measure also. Oil and grease don't cost that much.

Great job guys. The more that's done for this craft - the better for all.
    Happy riding

I agree with part of what Way2Fast says. If you are just a recreational rider the stock is fine but most of us are trying things to make us a little faster. I think the dual bearing is essential for the SS wear ring because of the shaft deflection especially under hard acceleration. There is a replacement bearing kit for the dual bearing setup also.

Removing the inner bearing seals and filling the entire pump with outboard lower unit lube is a trick that has worked well for me on the Ultras. The oil helps lube the bearings, and acts as a heat transfer medium so they run cooler. It also prevents water from entering.

That sounds like a good solution Richard. I never took the shaft out so I don't know if there was any oil in between them or not I was only told that removing the shaft was not a good idea because of the seal. But putting the oil between them sounds like a really good idea.
