I just bought a 2000 GTX DI that's it great shape.
How do I check the oil level in the tank?

Pull the front storage bucket out and visually look at the oil tank.

With that one, if the oil light comes on you have about a tank of gas worth of oil still in the tank.
Do not try to fill it all the way up. If you do it will likely leak all over the hull.

if the oil light works

I suppose that comes down to how well one maintains one's machines.
The best way to do it is get the oil level right at the seam and them add a bit each time before you go out. If the tank does leak (which it is not likely to if you do not go over the seam)
then you can try a new tank but they often leak too.
The worst thing for leaks is to fill it all the way up and then let it sit (made ever worse if you tilt the trailer up).
The only time I fill mine is if I am doing a long ride over a couple of days and do not want to carry oil with me. It may still leak, but it will not have time to do it much.
