Timing chain / tensioner help please
Question for you guys with experience with cam timing.
I have the intake manifold, valve cover and TOPS off. Iím setting the cam timing and then doing a compression test to verify that the cam is positioned where I want it. Anyway, when spinning the engine over with the starter the timing chain makes a slapping noise as it hits against the chain tensioner. When the oil pressure comes up and fills with oil the tensioner quiets down. I can still see the tension move in and out about a ľ ď as the cam backlashes from compressing and decompressing the valve springs. If I let the engine sit for a few minutes and check the compression again the chain will slap and then quiet down same as before. This is when spinning the engine over with the starter. I pulled the chain tensioner and inspected it. It was hydraulically locked, but when I released the oil trapped inside it I could easily squeeze it with my fingers and the spring inside it would return it to the expanded length. When engine is reassembled and started it sounds normal to me. Iím a bit reluctant to run it. Anyone know if this is normal?
