    compression release cable

Just purchased a 1992 Kawaski 650. My son and I bought this ski to learn a little about them before we get something newer. My question is will a compression release cable if not working properly make a cylinder low on compression. Does that cable release compression in both cylinders or just one? One cylinder is really low in compression and the other leaks down badly unless you pull the cable then will leak down again. The ski will start up perfect out of the water - only ran less then 15 seconds this way. Will not start in water. If you pull the spark plug out of the low compression cylinder ski will start right up in the water.

Any advice or direction were to start?

I am going to guess you mean the case drain cable. It is designed to help you drain the crankcase if you submerge the ski. It is also known to dry ann crack (gaskets) and let air into the crank case causing a lean condition. This will cause piston failure (usually in the mag or front cylinder) (PTO is rear, center is center on triples). Check you compression (fully charged battery, both plugs out, and throttle wide open) check each cylinder twice. Post results.

There is like next to nothing compression. I can hold my fingers over the spark plug holes and will not push them off. Would you recommend a crank block off plate? If the case drain cable was faulty - would that make you have no compression?

Pulled head off, piston broken, rings shot, head damaged. Time for a rebuild.
