    97 sltx 1200 no spark...plz help me get her going

    I just bought a 1997 sltx 1200 3cyl and im confused as hell about what i have and what i need. the ski has no spark. the
    previous owner said they changed the stator and flywheel a year ago. im guessing the engine was upgraded to a 1200? so here
    are the facts:
    cdi part number: 4060180 (with old red epoxy back)
    coil part number: 4060153
    has black wire comming out of elec. box to neg. battery term.
    in elec. box red/purple wire does NOT go to orange term.
    the stator does have like a 9pin quick disconnect running to the ebox
    coil ohms readings:
    black/white --> green/Black = .4
    black/white --> yellow/brown = .4
    black/white --> black/blue = .4
    black/white -->black = infinate
    black/white --> engine ground = infinate

    stator ohms readings:
    black --> eng. ground = .1 8648888123
    black --> purple = 5.5 ****(where as the non-updated should read 1200 ohms)****
    yellow --> red/purple = .8
    yellow --> eng. block = infinate
    red/purple --> eng. block = infinate
    each of the red,blu,green --> ground = infinate/open
    so omg im going insane... does this mean he upgraded the stator and not the cdi or is the 4060180 the updated one cause it
    says its for the 900 and 1050 engines!!? I do remember him saying it was originally a 900...so maybe they changed the engine
    but not the box? Espcially because the stator readings are that of an upgraded one and the quick disconnect plug on the
    stator which may have come stock on the 1200. And what is the upgrade part number for the cdi...like if i replace the 4060180
    out what do i put in... im assuming this is my problem.?. And do i move the purple/red cdi feed to the orange terminal in the
    e-box? and cut and tape off the ground wire? UGH sry guys im sooo new at this polaris thing!

    Welcome to Green Hulk !
    With 5.5 ohm on the stator Purple wire, it looks like you have the newer " updated style" stator.
    The 98-99 domestic models did have the inline 8-10 pin connecter.. Does your elect box have the 10 pin connecter comming out of it? If so-does the black stator wire go to the ground eyelet @ the coil bracket ?
    To eliminate the black wire to the battery-the CDI and stator need to be grounded to the bracket. (The correct CDI will have an: "eyelet" on the ground wire)

    Yes the 4060180 CDI is the old style-not updated CDI-and will not work with the newer stator.
    The update kit CDI # is written in paint on the CDI (4010447) covers part # 4010379 or 4010885. If you can find any of those # CDI or A 1200 CDI they should work .( I looked on e-bay and couldn't find any)

    The 3cyl coil will work with both ignition styles.

    Moving the red/pur CDI wire to the orange terminals is recommended if it is hard re-starting. Not absolutely necessary.

    Hey Cassey thanks for being here! Yes the ebox has a like 12pin gray quick connector comming off of it and yes the stator black wire that comes into the ebox goes directly to the coil bracket and does have that eyelet on it. And the black wire from the CDI also has been crimped and goes to that same coil bracket. I just ordered the 4060180....that was wrong wasnt it...shoot! So just to make sure im looking for 4010379 or 4010885 or 4010447.? im going to assume the previous owner was just throwing parts in to see what would work! dude by the way your awesome for helpin me!!! thanx so much!

    Your correct the 180 is for the old style stator you need any of the other 3 you listed to make it run with the newer stator

    Welcome

    If that engine really is a 1200, then this is a conversion situation since there were no 1200 engines in 1997.

    Also note that ALL 1200 engines came with the Gen III ignitions, including the 1999 1200 (SLTX-B (aka X-45). There is no 'Ignition Update Kit' for the 1200 engines.

    That 4060180 CDI is the original 1998-1999 1050 CDI. It will not work with either the updated or 1200 stators. Old CDI and stator versions can not be mixed with Gen III CDI or stator.

    Confirm the engine model number, or the cylinder part number. That will tell us if this really is a 1200 or 1050 engine.

    Purchase the correct Update or Gen III CDI for the engine you have.

    It is actually a warm no-restart problem that the wiring change is intended to fix.

    Do you have 12 volts on the Yellow wire when the engine is not cranking?
    If yes, then the LR module may need to be changed, IF it has been wired correctly.

    hey thanks so much for taking the time! yea the guy i bought this from said it was originally a 900 and they put a 1200 in it ....the current engine is a red triple that says 1200 on it ...in the morning i will get the numbers of the block and carbs
