    1996 polaris sl900 wont run

well i thought this was the benidx was bad cuz the starter would spin but not engage. Well i got the flywheel cover off and the flywheel nut was off and the flywheel was loose so how does the flywheel come off? is it screwed to the stator or what do the 2 screws in it hold? Also the nut seems to be fastened to the oil pump am i supposed to take the oil pump off the flywheel cover?

Check the flywheel and the stator for damage.

The taper on the crank shaft and the taper inside the flywheel must both be smooth and undamaged.

There is supposed to be a woodruff key. Locktite on the taper, and on the threads for the nut. The nut must be torqued to spec.

BTW, that looks like an Updated stator, which is good.

stator and shaft seem fine woodruff key does nto and the grove in the flywheel doesnlt look the greatest. As far as the nut being stuck to the oil pump is it supposed to be like that or what?

There is a plastic drive cap that sits on the flywheel nut. Normally you remove the oil pump and flywheel cover, and then remove the plastic 'cap' before removing the flywheel nut.

Your plastic piece may have been damaged, so I suggest buying a new one.
If the metal nut is not damaged, you can re-use it.
Edit: Was thinking of something else. The flywheel nut has the drive slot for the oil pump.

I have corrected my previous post. Sorry for misleading you regarding the oil pump drive.

What is the spring from? The Bendix?

im not sure where the spring is from not sure if it goes in the flywheel cover where the bendix slides in or what? because it is too small to go over the bendix. Here is a picture of it.
