Can the Stator damage the CDI?- 99 Genesis carbed

Started the boat on the trailer this spring and it fired right up. Next time we tried to start it - no spark.
Troubleshooting the no spark issue - the CDI was bad.
Changed the CDI and the boat fired right back up. After shut down - no spark again. Both CDIs are now fried. We tested them in running boats and neither are working.

    What gives?
Can the stator be to blame and how to test without destroying another CDI?

    update

Yes, a stator can burn up a CDI. That's why it's important to run through the diagnostic steps to rule out hardware before changing things out. This stator i'm taking off now was shorted out on several impedance readings. That could very well destroy a CDI.

You can ohm test the stator coils. The coils are the only things that could damage a CDI.

Links to the stator test procedure are in my signature.

Make sure there is not something else wrong with the Genesis, like a wiring problem or bad grounds. Remove, clean, check and reconnect all the grounds.

Yes I do ride Lake Ontario.

Bluffer's Park in Scarborough is the launch ramp I use the most. Sometimes Ashbridges Bay.

So if I am shopping for a CDI for this boat or any other 1200 carbed - is 4010885 the latest part they used (black epoxy - programmable?) etc.
There are a ton of part numbers for these CDIs.
We have a 1996 or 1997 900 that we just picked up and it had an update kit put in it - the cdi is black and it used that part number.

Polaris CDI part numbers are different for every engine size. They also vary with different cylinder porting or exhaust configurations. A 900 CDI will have a different ignition advance curve than the 1200 CDI.

You can find the 1200 CDI part numbers on the Polaris Industries parts web site, linked from the Parts Sources web page below. Where a substitution has occurred, that should be shown in the parts listing.

The online parts sellers also have the substitutions listed, but it is best to cross check with the official Polaris listing before ordering.

    Used CDI are also available.
