Thread: Cracked Hull
07-25-2010, 05:37 PM #1
After riding yesterday I noticed a lot of water in the hull. When I got home I crawled underneath and found large pieces of the gel coat are pulling loose from the bottom of the hull. If I push on the loose pieces water comes out around it. Is this something that can be fixed? Do marina's do this kind work? If I can get it fixed will it last very long?

it can be fixed
but depending on how bad it is you may need to take the motor out
as you will need to get to both sides to do the repair
all of the damaged fiberglass must come out, and it must be dry

I found a boat repair shop that will fix the hull. $500.00-$600.00. Ouch!! At least he said it will be done by monday. Of coarse my insurance deductible is $500.00. So it might not be much help.

I'd search for a new hull. Easier to find a $200 hull and have the peace of mind than pay for a pricy repair. This is a GP right?

Ya its a 98 gp1200. In montana its near impossible to find a hull. It even hard to find good used pwc's. If you do find them they are expensive. Besides I don't have time to swap hulls. We have a camping trip planned for next week at hauser lake and I was happy when he said he could do it before next tuesday. I think he knows what he is doing. He designs and builds custom fiberglass and carbon fiber boats. One of his boats won the americas cup twice.
Thanks for the replies.
I guess we will see if it holds up. He guarantees his work

The repairs are done. I pick it up tomorrow. It is reinforced with carbon fiber. But I will be keeping an eye out for a hull. I will have to watch the hull carefully. But it is not near as bad as the two honda r12 turbos that the composite shop is repairing. One t-boned the other. Smashed a large hole in the bow on one and removed a big section of the foot well on the other. I will get some pics of the finished hull. I Think the old owner put the keel guard on to cover up the the repair. I may put another one on to help protect the hull.
