Why use a phone to look at an A/F gauge instead of just installing a gauge to the ski, that is water resistant, and always there? Just seems like making things more complicated than they need to be.

Yamaha watercraft aren't OBDII compliant so there's no OBDII port to connect the unit to. If a vehicle is compliant, it will say so on the emission sticker. Most cars sold in the U.S. since 1996 are compliant. Go look at the emission sticker on your car (usually underside of the hood) and you'll see "OBD II CERTIFIED" near the upper right corner of the sticker.

Bluetooth versions of similar products have been around since 2007. Innovative avoided a world of problems by going WiFi with their unit.
