    Looking for SL650 impeller

Im looking for the original Polaris 5131056 impeller from my 94 SL650. I exchanged mine for one from SBT, however, the new one I got back is made to a little different spec and it seems to be loading the engine down some. I notice it most in hard turns. I was hoping to find an original in good condition, and I will keep the one I have as a spare for my SL750.

I just saw this one for $95.00 yesterday. You can't see all the blades in the picture so I would ask for more views but it looks to be in good shape.

I had a feeling your problem was that SBT impeller.

SBT claims they use the same spec for the 650 750 and 780. I didnt have any of these issues until I swapped impellers, but the new one seems to generally work pretty well, except when its under a lot of load. So Im guessing its a little too much for my 650. Im sure it would work great on my 750. Looking at the one on ebay, it looks to be in really good shape. I dont see any nicks or scrapes. I will inquire more.

The specs on the stock impellers for a 650 and 780 aren't even close. That is why I mentioned the impeller to you when I read SBT. I have read some things about their impellers similar to your experience. Your ski came stock with the 4 blade impeller that you're looking for right now. The 780's have a 1371 swirl in them stock. I am trying out an 035 in my 780 right now. It gives me a huge amount of thrust out of the hole with the 4 blade but I rev about 150 rpms higher at wot than with the 1371. I built another brand new pump with a Solas PB-SC-X on it. I am going to put that in next weekend and see how that runs. Whichever I like better I am going to leave in for the rest of the season.

So I am not the only one having this issue? At first I thought I had a lean hesitation so I rebuilt my carbs and cleaned everything out. But now I cant get it to go away. I got rid of the hesitation, but now its so slobbering rich on the low end, I am using a bunch more gas than my 750 and it smokes like hell at idle. Pulled the plugs after my ride today and they were completely soaked. Runs great from half to full throttle, but I cant get the bottom end to run right now. I have checked everything. Pop off is 15 PSI on all 3 carbs and im at the factory specs for my needle and jets. So im thinking if I get the right impeller on this thing my problems will go away.

Yeah I agree. I keep mine lean like that as well. My plugs are not soaked but they are a little wet with that nice brwon color. I would rather burn more gas than hole a piston. I get a little smoke at idle on the trailer but in the water it goes away right after I hit it. I get a cloud of smoke after a fogging. LOL!!!

That impeller on ebay is a little pricey but if the clearance is good than it is half priced. I only grabbed the Solas because I got it brand new in the box for $107.00 shipped. The thing goes for between $268.00 and $289.00 depending on where you look. I tried to get an opinion on Solas impellers here before I bought it but nobody responded so I just took it. I needed an 371 or 079 just in case the 035 didn't work out.

BTW: If you can find an 079 in decent shape that would probably work better for you also.

What are my options other than a Polaris impeller? Something like a 12/17?

I used the specs on the Solas website to decide what to go with. Solas impellers are made differently than the stock impellers though so I don't know if that would make a difference. I get great thrust out of the hole with the 035 4 blade on my 780. If I were to take the suggestions of Polaris it would never be on my machine. At this point I would say you really have to experiment with them a little. I haven't even run the Solas yet. I am going to try and run it this week to see which one I like better.

K447 also did a nice breakdown for me on impellers that helped me make the decision to run the 035. I would think that by looking at the chart and what we discussed on that thread that the 035 would work for you. It was designed for the larger hulls and installed on the 96 SL700 so I would think you would get better results from it than I am getting.

We will ignore differences in low end acceleration, and just focus on matching impeller to engine power, max RPM and load.

    Per the posted impeller chart

    5131035 4 blade 'Progressive'
    1994 SLT750 80 HP @ 6250 rpm
    1995 SLT750 80 HP @ 6000 rpm
    1996 SL700 80 HP @ 6250 RPM
    1996 SLT700 80 HP @ 6250 RPM
Here the Fuji 750 has similar HP ratings to the domestic 700 engines in 1996, and 80HP will spin the 035 impeller to about 6250RPM.
Not sure why the 1994 and 1995 SLT750 are spec'ed for the different RPM with the same rated power

    5131079 4 blade 'Progressive'
    1994 SL750 80 HP @ 6150 rpm
    1995 SLX780 90+ HP @ 6250 rpm
    1996 SL780 90+ HP @ 6250 RPM
    1997 SL780 93 HP @ 6250 RPM
This suggests that 80HP will spin the 079 impeller to about 6150RPM, and 90HP will get it up to 6250RPM.

    5131371 3 blade 15-20 'Swirl'
    1995 SL750 80 HP @ 6000 rpm
    1996 SLX780 90+ HP @ 6250 RPM
    1996 SLT780 90+ HP @ 6250 RPM
    1997 SLT780 93 HP @ 6350 RPM

The '035 impeller takes 80HP power to spin up to 6250RPM. Your 780 engine is rated at 90+, so I would expect another 100+RPM with the '035 installed, to maybe 6400RPM. Still well within the 6700 RPM limiter of the engine CDI.

The '371 was the beginning of the change from four blade to the three blade impellers, but otherwise seems similar in engine power requirements to the '079.

Note that the three seater SLT hulls have more weight and water drag than the smaller SL hulls. That translates into a little more engine load from the same impeller when running in the SLT hull.

The larger SLT hull also accelerates more slowly, which puts more emphasis on the impeller's ability to 'hold on' to the water and resist cavitation when launching from idle.

I expect the '371 impeller is a better match overall for the SLT hull than the '079, but the '079 impeller would work OK.

The '035 impeller would also work, but allow the engine to rev higher to about 6400RPM.

Solas doesnt seem to list any application for the 650, which is only 68HP. Im willing to give up a little top end for a better holeshot. I just want to get the engine to run correctly and not be overloaded at any point in its powerband. When I got the impeller from SBT i put it right next to my original 650 impeller, and it appeared to have a good amount more pitch than my original. they said their spec was a 12/18.

I guess it would be best to stick with the stock impeller, which is the 056. However, I think the 035 or 079 would work for you also. I was surprised how well the 035 worked on my machine but as you pointed out I am running more horsepower. To be honest I have not seen any of the aftermarket distributors with anything in a 4 blade which is most likely what works best in your ski. I guess that explains why the guys with 650's that have these 4 blade impellers won't part with them even if they have one as a spare.

The ebay impeller may be your safest option right now.

I am learning as I go along here myself, but my understanding was that Polaris had switched to the swirl to get on plane faster.
