Proper measurement of impeller clearance--what is the right tool?

What tool do you guys use to check impeller clearance? I only have blade type feeler gauges, and they do not conform to the shape of the pump housing. Is there something special I need? I guess I could use the wires from a plug gauge, but they don't have many increments.

I use the blade type feelers without any problems.
