2000 Virage runs great for 20 min

if I charge the brand new battery the ski will run great for 20 min.

I'm almost positive the ski isn't charging the battery. Could it be rectifier? Stator?

At lake now for next 7 days would love to get it working.

    Thanks
    Don

2 cyl, carb. What I didn't tell you is my starter went bad. Before I changed it I think I overheated the soleniod. With the old soleniod the starter wouldn't turn off until the batterry went dead (about 2 min of cranking, I had no tools to pull bat term). 5 sec after battery went dead the battery blew up. I replaced seleniod and battery. Now she won't charge whil driving so after 20 min the volt drops too low to keep it firing properly so I limp in at 5 mph with too much smoke (I think one cyl actually isn't firing but the other is).

    any ideas?

seems fine but can only do a thumb test on water. I replaced plugs yesterday. Again...it runs great for 20 min if I charge battery first.

Are you sure the start solenoid is actually releasing after the engine starts?
I am concerned the starter may be staying engaged after the engine starts.

Does the heavy red wire to the starter get warm while you are riding?
Does the starter itself get very hot?

Use a multi-meter (don't trust the MFI display) and measure the battery voltage with the engine idling. It should be over 13 volts at idle, and usually is over 14 volts.

    Is the battery new?

keith, dont you mean the bendix is still stuck together with the starter gear and it wont kick down off the starter gear?

It could be a stuck Bendix, but I am suspecting an electrical issue, since it requires a freshly charged battery in order to run for those 20 minutes.
