likely the dealer ( a golden dealer actually) had copies of keys for your ski in the back room. You need to have a working key in order to program a new key for any ecu.

I offer a key holding service for my k customers. I have one key in the shop which will allow me to make new copies for all my k customers. I just program my shop key number into their ecu..this allows me to make a fresh copy for them for the normal charges. ( key blank + min labor charge). I tell folks their slo key is worth it's weight in gold and to keep it with their titles...it still is when you compare the cost of a new ecu to the current price of gold.

you need to buy a new engine control unit. Without a single working key to start the computer, you cannot make a new key.

so with no key at all, you have a very expensive desk ornament.

    start looking for the keys

or spend $600+ on a new ecu.

Unbelievable! Another reason to not buy an Ultra 250 (or 260, or 300).

So the keys have to be programmed to the ECU. If a second, new ECU is purchased, can it be programmed to accept the old Keys. Like if someone wants one ECU left stock and a second ECU with a race tune in it can they both be keyed the same or will 2 sets of keys be needed?

Also you shouldn't buy some of the European bikes and cars for the same reason.
This technology (scam?) was originated there.

Actually ECU is being programmed not the keys. Keys don't have any memory device it. Instead, each key has own unique electronic doe or identification which can't be changed. When you buy a new ECU from dealership, the ECU has 6 blank memory spots. You can register or program 6 keys to one ECU.
