    Stator Problems

About a year ago I replaced the stator in my 96 SLX 780 and after that it ran fine for a year. Last weekend I had it out and I found my stator wires burnt again, so I figure the stator is back out. The next time I replace it, is there any way I can do it without replacing it in another year?

Do you mean burnt, as in blackened wires?

That suggests an electrical short. Does your electrical box sit on top of the battery? If so, is the plastic battery cover in place?

If the metal shell of the electrical box touches the battery posts, it can short and burn up the stator ground wire.

The wires are burnt. There is a plastic casing over the battery so im good there. I also noticed the main positive wire running in and out of the selonoid and the yellow/red wire running to the start button burnt burnt in the box.

Can you post a photo of the damage?

Look for any signs of wires being crushed or pinched when the electrical box is closed, or pressed against a temrinal lug.

Quite possibly the primary ground cable is not working correctly, as this shunts the ground current thru the smaller capacity stator ground wire.

Which one exactly do you mean by the primary ground cable?

I would think it was the cable from the battery ground to the engine case.
