2003 YAMAHA XLT 1200 - Engine trial run

    Hello guys,

First of all I want to say Hi to all! this is my first post here, and hope many to come.
You have wonderful community around here and I learned a lot from just reading the posts around here.

    So here's my question:
I recently bought a second hand 2003 XLT 1200. The watercraft engine has been totally replaced to a new one by Yamaha Motors and i was told that a trial run of 2 fuel tanks is needed.

First, what is a trial run?
Second, what is the best way to preform this 'Trial Run'?

    Thank you guys in advanced,

    Welcome to the forum!

You need to spend a few hours breaking it in. Someone else weigh in to back me up, but if I remember it correctly you need to add some extra oil to the system for the first tank (how much, anyone?), then for the first few hours spend time varying your RPMs while riding. No wide open throttle runs, don't get over 6K rpm, don't stay at a set RPM. I expect that someone who recalls the proper details will speak up soon.

Here, from the manual; start reading page 66.

    Hi Smitty,
Thank you for the quick reply, I didn't knew that I'm dealing with pro's

You were referring to the GP1200 user manual but it was a good tip for me to go to the specific section in my XLT manual which detailed all what is should know about what's called "Engine break-in".

Nevertheless, I will still be waiting for the big guns around here to give some tips for my engine break in.
