    Pump cavitation, loosing grip?

I have a 2001 Yamaha GP1200R and until the ski gets up on step a little, right when its coming out of the water, it sounds/feels like the pump isn't getting a full bite of water/cavitating. Once you get a little speed up and it levels out it will just about throw you off. Any idea what causing this?

    Thanks,
    D
