want to learn how to sail

I want to learn how to sail. Are there any good books or videos out there that can teach me the basics.

also whats a good small fast beginner sail boat i was thinking about getting a hobbie cat.

my father always talked about how when he was 20-25 how he used to races 18-21 foot boats and just fell out of it becuase he got to busy with his careers . he showed me some very old photos of him standing next to some of his boats. he said he would teach me what he remembers since he hasnt sailed in about 35-40 years and suggested i get some other material to help.

If you're interested in racing, check out your local sailing clubs to see what type of boats they have classes for before buying something. You'll probably find lots of local groups that race Sunfish and Lasers. Both are great to learn on.

The basics are pretty simple. After that it's all about how much you practice, especially if you want to get into racing. When I had my sailboat I took seamanship & sailing classes(classroom only) through my local US Power Sqadron & learned a lot. I have a couple good books on sailing. I'll take a look for you later & let you know the titles.

I learned the basics the hard way...in an itty bitty Sailfish and later on a 18' HobieCat. Fun....but slow.

Sailing is fun... for about an hour.
I guess racing them would be cool though.
My dad got me a little Sunflower when I was a teenager and I've done the Hobie Cats.

My dad used to race sailboats with his best friend Doug DeVos. He loves sailing, we used to have a couple hobie cats but nobody in my family but him would use them so we sold them. This is Doug's new boat, they hold the record for the Chicago to Mackinaw Island race, its an 86 footer.

I can look. When not racing they keep it at our local Yacht Club. The mast towers over anything, oh, and its fully carbon fiber lol
