My girl friend and i were recently bucked off our 09 fzr the machine is stock other than an air intake and exhaust, the machine is destroyed after striking a dock, and we both had to go to the hospital for neck injuries, I have been doing some research on here and found i am not the only one. Could everyone that has been bucked off there sho series watercraft please post your story and some contact info as this is going to be presented to yamaha in hopes that they will remedy this problem. I know most of you guys have changed out your intake grates now, but there are people who don't know about this problem and could be seriously injured or killed. I am not making any promises that anything will happen but it will at least get them to acknowledge there is a problem

I would like to know about this bucking issue as well since I'm potentially at risk till I get a new intake grate. What causes this and what canwe do to prevent it?

Yamaha is well aware.
Good luck with your effort though.
The only time I have personally seen a 'buck" on a SHO is too much ride plate angle. And, that was not a stotk ride plate either.

I am really sorry to hear that happened to you.
This should save you some time...
"I was pegged out on a lake and all of the sudden, it's as if I hit a stump!!! Next thing I know, I am airborne and then bouncing off the water. This was really fun doing 68-70 whatever my new stock ZR runs. I've read about stuffing and getting bucked but with a stock ski? Gonna be a while before can ride again. Make sure you change the grate!!! You dont want to be recovering from a surgically repaired torn bicep like I am thanks to getting tossed. Just figure it in to the cost of the ski because it is a must."
"I was riding this pm on clear waters my FZS stock, about 68 mph and suddenly stuffed, I was tossed off, landed about 25 yards from my ski. everything so fast. Now I have a hematoma in my back (big one) and multiples pains and aches. I will like to know if this may happen again, I am worry because i am just waiting for my RIVA Mods. This situation can end in seriuos injuries and even death. May be Yamaha should be aware of this..."
"I was riding my FZ on light wind ripple on my local river, and towards the top end it started getting squirrely. Almost felt like it was about to do what is called a "tank slap" with the handlebars, but on a motorcycle. I quickly, but gradually, let off the throttle, I didnt chop it. I have read this thead and that advice came in handy. Thank you... that was one of those moments where I had to sit there on the ski, idling for a few minutes, until the "hand shakes" went away"
Mpower: (not stock)
"Guys, we had another FZR rider get thrown off yesterday due to overstuffing. Just riding along sitting on the seat and not chopping the throttle it still stuffed. His shoulder is pretty messed up, it was out of the socket for 24 hours before they were finally able to put it back. Surgery may be required."
"I would be very interested in reading updates on this. I had it happen to me and slammed the bars thinking I hit a sandbar off Tybee Island. When I went back over my route I had plenty of water and no scratches on the hull. I still have a jacked nerve in my neck, a sprained wrist and saw stars for well over a minute."
"well the FZR is a awesome machine .... yes there was a problem with the bucking trust me i got thrown off my self doing around 95klms ouch... let me tell you its still hurts like hell... hurt neck , legs and tore a 13mm tear in my tendon in my shoulder muscle OUCH still hurts too lift arm up, we need help with grate big time before some one get hurt more serious or even worse."
"I have a stock FZS and it happened to me recently. Aproached the dealer and service dept and they have never heard of anything like this happening..."
"I had an off @ over 60 mph ( don't know exactly ) but it was in slightly rippled water and I released the throttle to slow down for a corner and WHAM !!! ski violently threw me off. I had to swim about 25 meters to grab my ski. That was the second time but first time i put it down to turbulent water. I was very sore the first time because I was riding with other riders later in the day( so I wore my Helmet ) Big mistake. Second time Definately was the ski..." (stock FZS)
"John I was thrown off my FZR at 70 and have had to have 2 operations due to this bucking problem. I have been riding for over 17 years and I know what a buck is. I have since added a R&D intake grade and at 76 I have had not more bucking problems. Take it from me getting hurt is not worth the cost of a R&D intake..."
"BROKEN ANKLE - stock FZR tossed me off - just got out of the ER room, after my FZR tossed me off, this thing is bone STOCK all i put on it so far is a BOV since ive been braking it in for the first 10 hrs, i really didnt think they could stuff the pump in stock form, and under throttle NOT after you let off... now i have a broken ankle and my foot completly twisted off and came off of its socket and was just hanging there sideways, what a horrible day... hopefully yamaha stands behind this and at least cover my surgery and medical bills... the only reason im pissed at the insident is cause the ski is (stock) so anyone that would have bought this ski and left it bone stock was going for an unsuspected swim, theres plenty of people out there that dont read up on online forums neither have acces to the internet that can buy one off these skis to just ride and get hurt, thats my point..."
"I am an experienced jet skier. Have had 2 Kawasaki 550's, 750, 2 ultra 150's and now a ultra 250. I gave a friends new FZR a ride and ski threw me off at 50 mph going straight in lite chop in less than 5 minutes.
09 FZR (not stock) mine did 76.2 never a buck or anything like it, one day i was riding and all of the sudden on dead flat water in the raritan river nj at 73.8 it threw me off and i landed head first blood was coming out of my eye and al0t of bruises nothing broken just ego i sold it in 2 days."
jefros (Riva grate)
"I have a FZS with a Riva Stage 1 (Riva grate). I was wide open (~72 mph gps) on flat water and then I backed off the throttle to make a gentle turn (still going straight). The next then I know, the ski jumps several feet to the left and apparently slowed down enough for me to fly over the bike "superman" style. I end up doing a couple of forward somersaults and then my legs dive into the water and separate causing a very forceful Chinese split! I felt my groin and lower abdominal muscles tear. Had to be dragged out of the water and took an ambulance to the ER. Luckily nothing broken but lots of torn muscles/ligaments. Anyways, now I know what bucking is. I am a fairly experienced rider and there was absolutely nothing I could have done to prevent what happened. I am not sure I want to ever get back on the ski. I thought an aftermarket grate fixes the problem. Has anyone heard of this happening with the Riva grate versus the R&D?"
Franky G (Riva grate)
"Man, sorry to hear that bro. Hope you get well soon. I had the same thing happen to me. I didn't get bucked off cause I held on to dear life, but in doing that I also ripped & tore some stuff in my albow. I remember running at full speed and suddenly the ski turned violently to the left and I felt my elbow pop when I tried so hard to stay on. After that, my whole arm swelled up and later turned black and blue. I guess it would have been worse had I took a dive. I was running the Riva grate at the time. I am now running the R&D grate with no issues."
I was also bucked off going 55-60 mph with my stock FZR when it just went hard right on me and I flew off head first. It was like a rollercoaster being on a rale. Went to the hospital with major swelling and bruising on my right arm. My tricep muscle has never been the same. Reported it to Yamaha and they inspected it but found nothing. BUll. Bought a grate and I have been fine ever since."
"I got thrown a LOONG ways. Luckily, it threw me all the way over and I didn't hit anything on the way off and didn't get hurt on the landing, but it was a long swim back to it in the 59 degree water that day. That was at around 10 hours on the ski. Changed to R&D grate and pump seal kit...40 hours no buck."
"I was very interested to see this post because I had my butt tossed while going about 70 on my 2009 FZS on smooth water this summer. I had figured I just hit a wave unexpectedly, but this bucking/overstuffing issue could be what caused it. Luckily, other than a bruised ego and a long swim back to my ski, I didn't get hurt, but it certainly changed my riding style for the remainder of the season. My jet ski was stock configuration when this happened."
"YOU WILL NEED an aftermarket grate because of the lift the plate will give the ski, And the stock grate already is known for bucking people of at stock form so don't try the plate till you have an aftermarket grate."

Just FZ as far as I know. The only reason it did it on mine was I had Jims R&D plate with no shims. Opened the window on the intake grate in the 70's and pop went the weasel.
Having said that, I am sure there is some situation where it could be forced to occur on a FX other than this specific situation.
