I sometimes wonder about the adjustable trim... that's the one thing that is constantly changing on both stock and modded craft; I have noticed when the trim is all the way in the "bow up" position this forces the nozzle up quite a bit in the rear, and as a result, a considerable portion of the jet wash is being partially blocked by the reverse bucket. You have to stand off to the side while its on the trailer to see this clearly. Could this be related, who knows... just a thought. I have also wondered what is it about the design of the R&D grate we are using, that seems to be preventing the stuffing effect.

The wing in the front helps load the pump better from what I understand. One thing I noticed today while looking at my ski is that on the R&D grate the two main suppot arms act as skegs towards the rear of the grate. See pic below...

I am the rider that got thrown from his FZS with a Riva grate. (actually full stage 1 from Riva except ride plate from R&D). The ski never acted unpredictable until that fateful day when I was bucked. Smooth water (no f..ing logs) and I slow down to set up for a turn at 70 when it jumps to the left and I am airborne. This happened Memorial day and I am still messed up. I ripped a lot of muscles in my groin and separated my pelvis. After 3 months of failed conservative therapy, I am going to have surgery to put a plate across my pelvis this Friday. I have recently inquired on this forum about possible changes with the 2011's that would prevent these incidents from happening. It does not seem like Yamaha has done any modifications? Anyways, sorry for the rant. As far as the original poster goes. I am sorry this happened to you. Thank God you were not more seriously injured and the ski did not injure someone else as it crashed into the dock. My empathy is with you.

I feel for you brother; I had to have my pelvis plated back together after a motorcycle wreck 10 years ago put me in my own damn trauma room (I'm a trauma nurse). Had an open-book fracture like you, but it was bad enough that it was fixed that week, along with some other things. While flat on my back in ICU, I promised my son I'd never ride a motorcycle again.

As soon as I could walk, I put a Stage II kit on my GPR.

So whats the final verdict? Can we say that currently R&D intake grate is #1 MUST MOD for the FZ machine until something "better" comes out? Sounds like we need closure on the subject..

*I am a Physical Therapist and deal with all above mentioned injuries at work and know how long and painful the rehab is. Raising awareness is my #1 priority as i will be buying an FZ in the spring and know many PWC riders here on Long Island NY.

A new grate is the #1 safety mod for the FZ series. The R&D grate is a very good choice. I use it and the hookup on the ski is easily 10x better. The old Riva grate had some breaking issues around the bolts but they replaced the ones that broke. The new Riva SS is stronger and should get the job done fine but I haven't seen many results with it.

You really cannot go wrong with either the R&D or Riva SS grate. Both will eliminate the buck and improve hookup. However, the R&D grate is very well tested so I recommend the R&D grate with a ppk.
