    2002 polaris virage I runs then stops

    I purchased this polaris a few months ago and it was backfiring and would not run. It was not getting spark or gas. After letting it sit for a few hours after replacing the battery I got spark and gas pressure. It would try to start but was backfiring. I had replaced the battery with a brand new one because of posts I saw on the web. I then replaced the reed valve since this is a common problem with this model. Now it starts and runs for about 5 minutes then shut down. If I am having emm problems can I flash the computer and reprogram it to fix the problem. It is almost the end of summer and all I done is work on this ski. It looks great but looks don't get you in the water. Is there something I could be missing. Also is it OK to block off the oil pump on this model or leave it alone. I am running synthetic oil in the ski due to it being fuel injected. The ski had been sitting for a couple of years and show 124 hours. If emm has to be replace and I use DFI to repair it I keep hearing that the fuel injector have to be mated to the computer to run properly. I was told the polaris dealer can do this. Is this something I can do rather than taking it to the dealer.

    You have been working on your Polaris all summer, and you just joined the Hulk?

    DFI repair will not affect the injector matching. You will get your EMM back ready to go with your existing injectors.

    Backfiring as you describe is a common symptom of EMM needing repair. There are other things you can check, of course.

    You must retain the oil injection system on a Ficht engine. You can not use pre-mix oil+gas with Polaris Ficht fuel injection.

    Were the old reeds actually damaged?

    The current symptoms are that the engine runs fine for five minutes - correct?
    Is that in the water at speed, or just idling on the trailer?

    Any warning message or red lamp on the MFI display?

    All you have done so far is install a new battery and change the reeds?
    Anything else?

    You were correct. I sent it to another mechanic in ten minutes he called me to tell me the EMM was bad. I did send it to DFI in Alabama. They did a quote of 600 dollars. After I called them back a few days later it was repaired and all I had to pay was 325.00 which was great. My mechanic drained the tank and cleaned it out. Put some new gas and he hit the starter and it cranked right up. No problems since. It is now Nov 2012. The ski runs great and great gas mileage. It is really quiet also. I really got into the skis now. I have purchased several over the last year. I am just getting into the 4 stroke skis now. I traded for my 2005 kawasaki. It does run but terrible. My mechanic says he believes it has a burnt piston but is going to tear down the motor this weekend and let me know. He suggested if it is just a burnt piston to replace the piston and the rings on all four cylinders. He think the fuel injector is bad but is going to check it also. He says we have to find out why it burnt the piston or it could happen again. Thanks for the help in the past.
