World Trade Center Freedom Tower - Rising From the Ashes

Take heart America, something is happening in New York...

    One World Trade Center -
Freedom Tower Rising From the Ashes

As the anniversary of 9/11 comes around, I felt it should be noted that something new is finally taking shape at Ground Zero. Quietly and majestically, while the world's attention has been on the Muslims who are trying to build the Ground Zero Mosque, a massive new World Trade Center Complex of multiple towers has been rising like a phoenix in New York. Tower One of these enormous structures is well on its way to becoming the very tallest building in the United States!

The roof of the top floor of One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower) will be 1,368 feet (417 m), the same as the original One World Trade Center. With its additional spire height, Freedom Tower will stand at a symbolic 1,776 feet (541 m) and it will surpass the Taipei 101 to become the tallest all-office building in the world and the tallest building in the Americas, surpassing the Willis Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower) in Chicago. The stunning height of 1,776 feet is no accident -- it is symbolic of the year our Declaration of Independence was signed. Above all of this, a brilliant beam of light will burst from the tip of the mast and extend even higher -- the intense beam of light will be visible over 1,000 feet into the air above the highest point of the new tower!

Along with One World Trade Center, the new World Trade Center site will feature three other enormous high-rise office buildings along Greenwich Street and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

On May 17, 2008, Freedom Tower's steel breached street level when new sections were bolted to two of the twenty-four jumbo steel columns marking the building's footprint. In June, 2009, the chamfered steel skeleton of the tower's concrete base had begun to take shape. Learning from the destruction of the original Twin Towers, architects have designed the new structure with a special fortress-like core, unlike any other building in the city. Inside the core are the emergency staircases which have been widened to accommodate both descending traffic and rising rescue workers at the same time. These staircases are surrounded by 70 tons of steel and concrete, forming reinforced bunker style walls that are up to 3 feet thick.

In early March 2010, 1 WTC reached 200 feet above street level and construction began on the first office floor. As of March 25, 2010, while work continues on the first office floor, steel beams began erection for the second office floor above street level. In April, plans for the 45-degree octagon were installed. One World Trade Center has now installed steel to the 26th floor. Concrete was completed on the base structure in late April.

In May, the Port Authority stated that they are building close to one floor per week, and that One World Trade Center should reach fifty-five stories by the end of 2010. The cocoon system has been installed to 1 WTC. It was the first time a cocoon safety system has been installed on a steel superstructure in NYC.

As of July 2010, 1 WTC's steel superstructure is 340 feet above ground and is on floor 32 and concrete installation is on floors 26 and 27. As of August 26, One World Trade Center has risen to 36 stories, becoming part of the skyline of New York.

Larry Silverstein, the owner of Silverstein Properties and the developer of 7 World Trade Center, talked about a soaring boost to the local economy. You may recall, Silverstein's company closed on the WTC property only 6 weeks before the original towers were destroyed by Islamic terrorists in 2001. Silverstein said in a conversation published on his own World Trade Center site, “[The area] will experience a massive increase in the number of people working down here again, because you’re going to have a hundred thousand people who formerly went to the trade center coming back in when these buildings are built. That of course brings a whole range of other services that are needed by the hundred thousand people that’ll be working in the buildings.”

Take heart America... rising from the ashes, freedom is still ringing!

Now this is some heartwarming news. I'll be making a trip to NYC to have a beer at the top of it.

I thought they were still deciding what to build there? Happy to see they decided.

Yes, it's happening, and it's huge! The new WTC will be a unique combination of memorial experience and enormous, shining new structures. From what I can see, the new towers will stand behind the memorial, and look down upon it, like silent witnesses to the fact that we will never forget what happened. They are planting an entire forest of 400 white oak trees right now, they are each 30 feet tall. When people see this for the first time, many will be moved to tears, and also filled with joy -- the memorial fountains look like massive holes in the ground; the water pours over the edges and falls into them; symbolic of the hole those monsters left in the heart of the American people. The new towers and commerce rise up and tower over the entire city, symbolizing the dedication and enduring freedom that has carried our nation through the darkest times. They are planning on opening this next year on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attack on our nation.

One World Trade Center tower (Freedom Tower) is just one of several massive buildings that will be erected to compose the new World Trade Center. The design is officially known as "Memory Foundations" because it leaves room for several memorials in the 16-acre complex. One of those memorials is the slurry wall, more commonly known as "the bathtub." This structure was the basement of the World Trade Center and served to hold back the Hudson River to keep it from flooding the complex. It was here that the remains of thousands of dead were found, and hundreds more who were never found. People will be able to walk down a ramp from ground level all the way down to bedrock along the edge of this wall -- the last original remaining piece of the twin towers. are they not worried about another attack? If I were in charge of building this building I would be very nervous about another attack on it...and this building would mean even more wouldn't it?

They are anticipating another attack even in the design stage. Parts of this building are designed to be almost a fortress; they have 70 tons of reinforced concrete just in the stair wells, they are 3 feet thick. We cannot live our lives in fear of any sect or group.

You're not listening grasshopper. They aren't planning on stopping the jet, they are anticipating it will happen!

By the way, it's not just cement, its 70 tons of steel inside the concrete; also the water supply lines for the sprinklers are all located inside this bunker core. I have heard that when the planes hit the first towers, they cut the water lines and damaged the sprinkler system -- so not enough sprinklers to slow down the fires.

Engineers say the impact of the planes was not the primary cause of collapse. I'm not an expert on this, but if you recall, the towers did not fall when the planes hit them; it took a while -- from what have read, it took the tremendous heat from massive fires to distort the steel of the internal structure and then they fell. Here is a detailed engineering page written by Thomas W. Eagar and Christopher Musso, which states regarding the collapse:

"While the aircraft impact undoubtedly destroyed several columns in the WTC perimeter wall, the number of columns lost on the initial impact was not large and the loads were shifted to remaining columns in this highly redundant structure. Of equal or even greater significance during this initial impact was the explosion when 90,000 L gallons of jet fuel, comprising nearly 1/3 of the aircraft’s weight, ignited. The ensuing fire was clearly the principal cause of the collapse."
    http://www.tms.org/pubs/journals/jom...agar-0112.html

The light construction and hollow nature of the structures allowed the jet fuel to penetrate far inside the towers, and those fires brought them down. Keep in mind, those original towers were designed back in the 60's, and they can build much better systems today. There have been reports that better fireproofing and construction should have been used at the WTC and was not. As I understand it, they have now raised the fireproofing and building codes for all new construction on these big towers in NYC. Having said that, and even though the impact was tremendous, it should be noted that these old buildings did not come down easily. With a better designed sprinkler system and better fireproofing, they might have stood a lot longer, even after the planes hit. Even with those gigantic fires burning inside, I have read that the south tower lasted almost an hour (56 minutes) after impact, and the north tower lasted an hour and 40 minutes.

USAToday reported, "The evacuation was a success. Nearly everyone who could get out did get out... The buildings, sturdily constructed, exquisitely engineered and equipped with stairwells bigger than building codes require, stood just long enough to give potential survivors a chance to get out."
    http://www.usatoday.com/news/sept11/...tcsurvival.htm

So sure, they can fly the jet into the structure, but I think this new tower is designed to do an even better job than the old towers of resisting that -- AND provide a safe exit for most of the occupants. More info here on the new structure:
