    650 flywheel removal

What is the trick to removign the flywheel on my sl650 engine. I got the nut and washer off and am not sure what to do from here and want to be careful not to damage the stator.

    Thanks!

Your smart to ask! because if you thread the bolts in to far you will ruin your stator! only go in 3/8 of an inch! they make a special puller our you can use a quality puller (not harbor freight! Z

Thanks Z...glad I asked. Where can I get a puller? Is it something I can rent at an auto parts store?

BD If you have the engine in the boat save your time and energy and buy the unit Randy at Watcon sells. If it's out a longer Snap On type puller will work if you rent it from your local auto parts store/machine shop.

Here is the one you can use if the motor is out it has to be a decent one! it's the same as an auto one so you may be able to rent it? one trick is to tap on the bolt as you tighten! and get ready to be startled! and don't loose your crankshaft woodruff key! Z

Thanks for the info guys. The engine is already out sitting on my bench. Looks like autozone is getting a visit this weekend.

You are going to have a problem trying to loosen the stator bolt, if it's on your workbench. The crankshaft is going to spin. Remove the spark plug closest to the stator and drop in a little bit of nylon rope, to keep it from spinning. The book will tell you how if you have one.

Get the puller as tight as possible and whack the end of the screw with a baby sledge. . . POP!

Ok...so I got the puller...and have gone through 3 sets of GOOD quality bolts and the only pop I'm getting is one of them stripping and shooting across my basement but the flywheel isn't moving. Any suggestions before I take a sledge hammer to the engine?

Like addicted states whack the center puller bolt after it's really tight! if u use heat be careful their are bonded magnets on the flywheel! that being said I needed a little heat when I did mine! Z
