    Yamaha VIN decoding

Probably has been asked before but I was wondering how to decode the VIN of the waverunners. Am buying a fxho and would like to check if it's ok. Is there also something similar to CARFAX or AUTOCHECK for PWCs?
    Thanks

There are several places that will do it. Here are a couple (Boatfax is probably the best): http://www.boatfax.com/component/opt...it/Itemid,184/, http://www.boathistoryreport.com/

If the seller has a clear title its probably not worth it for a used ski. If you just want to verify the model, manufacturer, year, etc., check this out: http://www.boattitleanswers.com/?p=5#more-5

You might also call the titling agency in the state that the ski is registered in. In many states you can give them the HIN and they will give you some basic info for free......ski reported stolen, etc..

I found an easier way to decode the first three digits are the manufacture code the next 5 are the serial number and the last four are the month and year. ie last four of mine is J697 this means January 6 1997. Hope that helped!

That is close but not quite correct for decoding marine HIN plate codes.

The very last two digits are the model year. In your example of J697 the model year is 1997

The J697 J6 portion tells you the last digit of the year the hull was assembled, so 1996 in this case. It is common for factory production of next year’s models to begin during the prior year’s fall and winter, so 1997 models can be made during late 1996.

The letter code is for the month of production.
There is a published table of marine HIN letter codes and what month each letter code maps to.

    A JAN
    B FEB
    C MAR
    D APR
    E MAY
    F JUN
    G JUL
    H AUG
    I SEP
    J OCT
    K NOV
    L DEC

J697 = It was manufactured in Oct of 1996 asa
    1997 model
