    947 crank seal

Will someone tell me if the Mag side crank seal is installed with the case apart. As I look at the new seal and then look at the one in the ski, it suggests that, if this is the case, the original one was installed incorrectly. The side with the spring is facing the mag not the case. I have been unable to get the original one out. HELP!!!

Yes motor has to be apart to install crank seals.

Then it begs to ask the question: What else should I replace while the engine is out? Or should I just get a rebuilt one?

"CRAP" I say how is anybody to learn other than being shown by someone or to learn it yourself.
Go for it I say, get in there and see for your own eyes how things work and the design behind it.

Well as long as all the bearings and rods are all good then always replace the crank seals. but make sure you check the bearings by pressing hard on them and roll them back and forth. if you feel a rough spot then its time to replace the crank. and also check the ones on the counter balance by doing the same test. if all is well then start your rebuild. and good luck.
