    Da "Death Rev"

    How can i fix this?

On my 97 sltx1050, out of the water letting it idle(aprox. 4000-4500rpms), the rpms suddenly rise to the limit(7000rpms) and sometimes it doesnt allow me to shut it off.

Out of the water idle is not 4000+ RPM. It is normally about double the in-water RPM.

Death rev is usually a symptom of incorrect carburetor settings, or gummed up carb inards, or air leaks in the intake system.

Set the idle RPM adjustment screw in the water to under 1500RPM. Exact spec varies slightly depending on your model and year.

Confirm that the low speed carb screws on each carb are correctly set. Too lean (screws turned too far IN) can cause or aggravate a death rev situation.

You can adjust the engine idle with the ski on the trailer. Just back it down the launch ramp until the jet pump intake is submerged. Make sure it is strapped down to the trailer front and rear.

Tip: Out of the water, you can kill a death rev (after pulling the lanyard) by applying full throttle, or the choke.

The reason it keeps running is that it is 'dieseling' - hot spots inside the combustion chamber are igniting the lean full+air mixture, which creates excess heat and keeps the hot spots hot.

Check for any air leaks in the engine and fuel system.
