Don't mess with any cheap stuff. It's not worth it. If a radar detector saves you from *one* ticket, it will have paid for itself then and there.
That being said the *only* (IMHO) radar detector to get is the Valentine One (V1). You can save a bit by getting a "refurbished" unit from them. I got mine refurbished almost 20 years ago and the thing still works fantastic to this day!

+1 on the Valetine 1, when an update is released you can send your unit in and they'll update it for you.

I agree-- don't waste your $$ on a cheapie. It won't react quickly enough to the low power, short range systems now in use.

I have a cobra XRS 8 detector that has saved my a$$ MANY times! While it is not as high dollar as the V1, I have never had a problem with it. Always detects K, KA, and Laser FAR in advance! I like it because it has a remote display unit that can be placed anywhere in the passenger cabin, and you can mount the actual detector up by the rearview mirror (like an EZpass). I think it makes it a little harder for other vehicles (and police) to spot. I also hard wired it into a keyed 12V source, so I don’t have to turn it on and off every time I get in and out. It also has "intellimute" which will not alert if the vehicle is under a user set RPM (like idle), nice feature.
I have been thinking of getting a laser jammer to work in conjunction with my detector. Any recommendations? I was looking at the Blinder M27 xtreme. anyone have one?
Sellout woot has an "EL Cheapo" radar detector for sale today for $35. Looks decent if you just want something that will work on a basic level. You can see it at www.sellout.woot.com. If you don't know about woot, the deal is only good for the day, so hurry up and decide if that’s the one you want!!!

Jammers are very illegal, If they put a laser on you and they know you are speeding and it doesnt read on there laser gun, they'll still come after you. So with or without a jammer you'll still get stopped.

i bought this one, and have never looked back. it is simply amazing. remembers locations of false alarms, red light cameras, speed traps, etc. by using GPS.
i had the 8500 x50 by escort, it was great, but decided to upgrade to one with GPS, to the 9500. they are both great units. Pricey, but saved my butt quite a few times....
oh, you can get the display in red, for $50 less (don't ask me why, i guess blue LEDs are more expensive). went with the blue, it matches the gauges in my car.....
