    1996 xp remvoving gauges

How do you remove the gauges on a 1996 xp? I took off the access cover on the hood, but cant seem to figure out how to unscrew the ring on the gauges.

+1 on the pain in ass to unscrew, i had to bring down the diameter of my 6mm deepwell to get all the screws out and separate the halves then you can get a better handle on it. IMO i would get a single pod sp/spx earlier hood with no mirrors and put the multi gauge in it and sell the vts gauge and dreamometer.

I just heated up the socket and jamed it in there till the plastic moved out of the way. now they come of with ease

Pretty clever idea, I hacked up an el-cheapo socket as well, split the sections and used channel locks on the retaining rings/nuts. Tried like hell at first to try and find a nutt driver I could fit down in the hole.

Since my gauges were ruined (speedo and trim) I ended up jamming a small flat head screwdriver in between the ring and the gauge and pried. It broke off a little chunk, and loosed both the rings enough they could be unscrewed.

I am replacing speedo and trim with a Trail Tech Vapor and moved the fuel gauge over.

Push down on guage while trying to unscrew the retaining ring.

As far as getting the 2 halfs apart....they make a tool called nut drivers, looks like a screwdriver with a socket on the end.
