Anyone have any idea on this? 2001 GTX Carbed Version

I purchased a used 01 GTX (carb version) that had some issues but I got it running.
There has been a toggle switch spliced into the red wire (shown in photo, green arrow).
To start the ski, I put the DESS key on (no beeps) then toggle the switch that has been added, then I get 2 beeps and it starts!

It appears to be providing power to the MPEM (guessing). Iím wondering if the MPEM is bad or something in the DESS post?

    Any ideas?

See photo showing which wire has the toggle switch added to it.

its probably because the previous owner didnt ride it that much and when you let it sit for long periods of time it can kill the battery. I assume he put that there to save the battery because the MPEM draws power all the time

That effectively disconnects all accessories in the boat, including the MPEM. Probably put there to help save the battery.

Odd thing is when I take out the switch or leave it "on", the DESS wont beep twice when connected, nothing at all. If I "toggle" the switch off and on with the DESS key in place, I get two beeps and she starts right up.

Sorry airborne, your post didn't hit when I replied, didn't mean to step on your toes.

Jekvall, Just to be clear, you are reconnecting the red/pur wire (as from the factory) after you "take out" the switch right?

If so, it sounds like your MPEM needs to be reset for some reason and that switch seems like a good fix.

Yes, reconnecting the red wires to each other.
When connected the ski won't do anything, no beeps no gauges etc. Dead.
When unhooked then reconnected with DESS key on, I get two beeps and it runs.
If I leave the wires connected and pull the key and try again , no beeps until I break the wires apart and reconnect them.

    clear as mud right.

Thanks for any input and ideas.

I have done this for a couple of customers. I keeps the MPEM from sucking the life out of the battery in a month or two. IF you turnthe switch on then install the dess key it should beep twice and crank. If it doesnt and you tried connecting the red wires (not just holding them together) thenthere is another issue. That red wire powers the whole ski except the starter its powerd by the cable

Thansk , I must have "another issue" since when I connect the wires, then hook the DESS key up, I got no beeps until I unhook the red wires and re hook them (with key still in place) then I get two beeps and all is well, until I unhook the key then I have to disconnect and reconnect the wires, seems like its resetting a timer in the MPEM???

Do all the gauges work? What if you disconnect everything unnecessary for running the engine? Just wondering if a faulty gauge or sensor is hanging the MPEM and by having the key installed it is read before the MPEM gets to the fault.

I have no idea if that is even close to how the MPEM works, but I would want to try to eliminate as many possibilities as I could. I'd hate to replace the MPEM when the compass is bad.

What happens with the start/stop button 5 times with no lanyard diagnostic?
