Thread: 787 Starter

Good afternoon all,
I replaced the starter in my 97 XP about mid summer. It worked great for a few weeks. Now when I go to start the engine it just spins the starter. The gear does not catch the engine. Is there anyway to fix this with out pulling the starter, such as spin the engine over by hand, beat on the starter? Any tricks? Do you think the gear broke? Would I have to pull the flywheel and clean it out from shredded gears? I heard there were 2 different types of starters that work. I think one has 8 gears and one has 9 gears. I chose the lower one so that I'd get more cranking torque. Was that the problem? I know the battery is good because it worked great the day before and it was on the trickle charger all night. Thanks.

sounds like your bendix is not engaging. you would need to pull the motor and remove the flywheel. when you do this make sure that you mark the position of the MAG cup to keep the timing correct.

On the 800 the bendix is all in one in the starter, take out the starter and look it over. 951's have a separate bendix.
