    2001 Genesis Setting Timing

I've just replaced the CDI on my 2001 Polaris Genesis - Carbs so I need to check the timing. My Polaris manual on page 7.22 says to dial indicate the piston at .081in BTDC. When I did that the label on the flywheel indicated that it was at 17deg BTDC and that reading agrees with page 7.2 which has a chart of engine degrees to piston postion. Using my timing light my timing is presently at 23deg BTDC at 3000rpm, so I need to retard the spark 6 degrees. So, I need repostion the magnet in the flywheel to accomplish this.
But, what I don't understand is that page 7.1 has a chart that says the timing should be at 23deg at 3000rpm and piston postion of .137in. The chart on page 7.2 agrees with 23deg and piston position of .137in.

Why is the timing section saying to set the timing at 17deg BTDC/.081in and another section has a chart indicating 23deg BTDC/.137in? Plus my timing is at 23deg after replacing the CDI and I'm typically not that lucky!

If you just changed the CDI and did not touch the stator or flywheel timing ring, then the timing should be fairly close to correct.

The CDI itself only has an adjustment range of 2 degrees plus or minus.

The base timing is controlled by the inner timing ring on the flywheel, and the stator sensors. If those have not been touched, then the timing should be close.

Your timing light should simply confirm that the timing is fairly close, or spot on.

Yes, I changed the stator too and didn't move the timing ring in the flywheel. So, in summary the stator and CDI have been changed.

My question is why is the timing stated as 17deg in one section and 23deg in another?

My guess is that your 2001 manual on page 7.22 is a cut & paste from the 1999 manual's section (page 7.41) for the 1050cc engine which actually does use .081" piston position for the correct timing on that engine.

I think the specification chart at the front of the section in your manual is correct (23deg at 3000rpm and piston position of .137in) and the text description of the procedure on page 7.22 is also correct except for the actual piston position distance.

Your logic seems right with the additional information on the 1050CC engine. The engine ran well for the few minutes I ran it with the hose hooked up but, I need to get it in the water for the final test.

    Thanks for the information!
