Differences between the 95 and 96 SLX

I have two SLX models right now. One is a 95 and the other is a 96. The pump assembly and the drive shafts between the two are way different. The impeller in the 95 looks like a SL model, but the 96 has rounded blades. Is this correct? Can you interchange them?

What do you mean the pump and drive shafts are different? Those should be the same.

    The impellers ARE different.

The 95 SLX 780 used the same impeller as the 750 . (4 blade progressive)

While the 96 used the 3 blade 15/20 swirl impeller.

Yes they are interchangeable, but the jetting specs for each impeller should be followed.

Are the jetting specs different because of the impellers, or because the carbs were slightly different internally?

I have not checked whether the carbs were actually different or not, just asking

Good question. I was going to put the 95 Carb on the 96 Since I just rebuilt it.

So if I understand you correctly, if I use the 96 pump, I will need to change out the jets in the 95 Carb?

    jetting

i wouldn't change the jetting.different carbs had different transition ports.unless the 780 motors have different porting just move the carbs.low and high adjusters are carb dependant,my 96 slx780 had the earleir settings.this was due to the style carbs it had.

I took some pictures of the 95 SLX shaft and the 96 SLX shaft so you could see the difference.

when looking at the pictures, the 96 is on the left, and the 95 on the right.

I take it they are not interchangeable.

Actually, I think they are interchangable. I compared the two driveshafts that I have (both from '94 SL650s) and they are just like the pair you have, one's a little different from the other. As long as the length is the same...

    Apparently both reasons.

Use the 96 parts together if you can.

Drive shafts are interchangeable. One was designed for the rubber mounted engine coupler (longer splines) and the other was meant for solid engine coupler. Although, either style may be used.
