    SLX 1200 Won't Start/Backfires

I need help. My 2000 SLX was running fine. It was shut off normally one afternoon and it wouldn't start back up. Discoverd low compression in one cylinder. Honed and re-ringed the bad cylinder. Now the compression is 130, 135, 135. I also installed new diaphrams in both fuel pumps. It still won't start and now it backfires after about 15 seconds of cranking.

It has good spark in all three cylinders. The stator was replaced by the local Polaris shop recently (3 months ago), along with a carb rebuild and a new CDI. It also has new plug wires.

I pulled the reeds and looked them over but they look fine. No cracks or discoloration. Not out of spec according to the manual.

It seems to me like the timing is off but I don't know how that could be the case.

Does anybody have any idea. I've exhausted all of the ideas I had and any help is greatly appreciated.

    Welcome aboard KSCTim!!!

Sometimes when compression, fuel, and spark have all been verified and there's still a problem, it COULD be firing at the wrong time. Like you say, timing.

I've seen a stripped, or slightly F'ed up flywheel woodruff key be the culprit of this more than once...

Maybe when the Polaris guys did the stator they didn't torque the flywheel properly???

This is kind of what I was thinking. But it seemed highly unlikely to me. So, I thought I'd solicit some other opinions. Thanks for the advice.

I know it may sound stupid. But did you check that the plug wires are on the right plugs?

KSTTim, WELCOME to the green Hulk forums!!!!

Was it running after you got it back from the dealer?
It may also be crossed wires to the plugs?

As far as I know it was a new CDI that was installed (They charged me for a new one). It was running fine and was shut off normally when this all started. I have the plug wires labled and have verified that they are on the right cylinders.

I would try one more thing, verify the update was performed to the CDI wiring. The power supply to the CDI is a red wire but needs to be attached to the orange supply terminal (switched) on the electrical board.

You might also want to verify the start/stop switch is operating correctly.

OH, try disconnecting the battery and then re-attaching and see if it starts. Leave it disconnected for a few moments.

Went out to the garage and tried. Didn't work. Big backfire!! Ears ringing. I give up.
