how about this shit
while tuning my ski i noticed it lost power be fore the hydro drags and at the drags.
what happened was my crank gear spun and it caused my cam timing to be off about deg. notice the marks on the crank and counter balancer are not lining up.
HOW TO CHECK IT
PUT ENGINE CYL 3 @TDC
REMOVE PTO COVER
HOW THIS HAPPENS
GOING FAST COMING UNHOOKED THE HOOKED
WHAT IT DOES
CAUSES LOSS IN COMPRESSION AND POWER LOSS BIGTIME.
HOW TO FIX IT
HAVE A QUALIFIED MACHINEST CUT IN A KEYWAY TO LOCK THE GEAR IN PLACE.

wait, what? they aren't keyed stock?! that's a pretty poor design to just press it onto the crank. is the cam gear keyed?

Cam gear bolts on to cam shaft - solid.
The sprocket on crank that runs cam is solid, one piece.

IT HAPPENS ALOT BUT PEOPLE DONT KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR OR SYMPTOMS. WHEN EVER YOU BUILD A ENGINE YOU MUST ALWAYS DO A COMPRESSION CHECK PRIOR TO START UP THEN ABOUT EVERY 10 HOURS TO SEE IF ALL IS GOOD. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED.
AGAIN IMAGINE GOING TO THE DRAGS AND HAVE YOUR ENGINE AT 75% POWER.

Time for a lightened counter-balancer weight.
If what you say pulls the gear round, then my guess is the weight eventually pulls it round.... bit by bit..!!

Was the crank and/or counter balance lightened?
I was not sure what all Les does to the internals.

Maybe counter balance needs to be lightened too.
You got me thinking, so I pulled my manual and it does not say to check markings with crank tool inplace, but does show a pic of crank locked and markings perfectly lined up.
