New Stand up Toy
I picked up a Kawi JS550 for a deal, I have been wanting a stand up ski for a while for my 11 year old son to race here in region 5, they have a 11-13 year old stand up class here, I used John at Unishippers and got a real fair price from Simi Valley California were the ski was located, I really wanted a Octane but everyone wants way to much for them now, And I can race it in the vintage 550 class here as well, I went over to the Kawisaki side of the Hulk and asked for a few pointers but not one person answered any questions, they don't seem as freindly as the Polaris riders,

They do not follow the older skis very much over there.
What are you looking for?

It has a thumb throttle, would it be better to do a finger throttle?
I found some tubbies to put on the sides that look pretty cool, and they are race legal, it appears they make it a more stable ride?
I was also going to put some foot holders on, do they really help?

I forgot to mention the mods it came with,
1987 kawasaki js550 bored .30 over, wiseco pistons, high compression head, 44 mil mikuni carb, all new red silicoln water and fuel lines, west coast alluminum water box, muffler removed, primer kit, alluminum nose hull rienforcment, quik steer, aftermarket handle bars, jetsport ride plate with r&d 17 degree stainless solas impeller. the previous owner says they are pretty easy to work on,

They are really easy to mess with, but it sounds like you have a good package there. Should run mid 40's in that setup, depending upon who is riding it. looks lie it was decked for racing.
As for the foot holds, I have never used them, but have seen a few different methods, mostly for freestyle not racing.
Post pics of the "tubbies" my brother has a shell that goes around his for stability when his daughters are riding

check this website,
Some are bolt on, and some are fiberglassed in, but they are race legal.
I thought to hang on going fast, you needed some foot holds,
I havent rode a stand up since my old water ski show days at Sea World in Florida back in 82, we used to take them over the ski jump, boy did we catch some air,

I'm by no means a standup expert but have come to know what I like.
I like a finger throttle--I have them both. My hand goes numb on the thumb throttle but I've abused my hands...
I also like straight bars (or close to straight). These help me get more forward on the ski like trimming-up. I go 270#. My 650SX has something like 15° bars (or more?). I hate those bars.
No help on the tubbies. Have heard of them but don't know what they are.
XH20 is a pretty good site but seems hard for me to navigate.

if you go to PWCTODAY.com, they have a bunch of old school info and riders on there, be prepared, there are alot of douch bags on there, but for old school ski's it's good...
